Abstract
  Bangladesh is a country where agro power crisis has become a major problem. Over the years farmers in Bangladesh have been dependent on diesel and electricity driven pumps for irrigation purposes. Inconsistency between power demand and supply, environmental degradation etc have driven the need to explore alternative and sustainable technologies for irrigation. Bestowed with enormous solar radiation Bangladesh can look for solar powered irrigation pumps to mitigate the present crisis. This paper deals with the techno economic feasibility of solar powered irrigation and its role as a key to sustainable development of agro economy of Bangladesh. It performed a comparative analysis on the basis of performance,cost,environment friendliness between existing diesel pumps and solar pumps.
