Advanced Operation and Control Schemes for a Micro-grid with Battery Energy Storage Systems

Abstract
Unlike conventional power systems a micro-grid tends to suffer power source fluctuations due to the fact that the output power of distributed generators (DG) based on renewable energy sources (RES) are intermittent in nature. Connecting micro-grids embedded with DGs of this kind to the local distribution system (DS) may also lead to severe power quality problems. Typical power quality issues are voltage dip and swell while connection and disconnection of large DG units, fluctuations in area electric power supply, unbalanced and distorted output voltage. In this paper, the benefits of using battery energy storage systems (BESS) in advanced operation and control of a micro-grid embedded with RES based DG is investigated.
