Abstract
In this paper, a new Contra-Rotor Airborne Wind Energy Conversion System (CRAWECS) to operate above ground is proposed owning an efficient topology and minimum gyroscopic effect, which make it suitable for high altitude wind energy generation. This system is currently registered as a patent with number of 71466 in Iran. The proposed CRAWECS consists of four Gas Filled Savonious-Style Turbines (GFSSTs) arranged as two binary sets. Two coupled GFSSTs of each set are on the same axis and rotate in contrast. Moreover, a pitch angle control strategy for optimum operation of the proposed CRAWECS is designed. The performance of the proposed CRAWECS is extensively tested in practical conditions and the obtained results are compared with the results of the other airborne wind conversion systems. These comparisons confirm the effectiveness of the proposed CRAWECS.Index Terms—CRAWECS, wind energy, contra-rotor, GFSST, pitch angle control
