Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of hydrogen addition on the performance and emissions of a natural gas (NG) engine. The research was conducted on a spark ignition NG engine with the use of three different kinds of fuel compositions: (i) hydrogen/CNG mixtures including pure compressed natural gas, and (ii) hythane with the hydrogen content of volumetric percentages of 15% and 30%. It has been found that the volumetric efficiency, power and torque of the engine reduce with increasing the amount of hydrogen in hythane. In both of the full load or part load cases, the amount of CO and unburned hydrocarbon (HC) were reduced through adding hydrogen to natural gas. However, hydrogen, because of its high temperature burning, unfortunately increased the amount of NO emission. Moreover, hydrogen enrichment could significantly extend the lean operation limit, and also improved the lean burn ability of the engine.
