Abstract
Water and sediment samples were collected from two rivers from cocoa producing areas of Ekiti State and analysed for the presence of thirteen organophosphosphate pesticide residues. A gas chromatograph coupled with flame photometric detector (GC- FPD) was used to quantify the organophosphorus pesticide residues. The results showed that all the analysed samples were contaminated with some levels of oraganophosphorus pesticides. The concentration of OPPs in water ranged from below detection limit BDL – 0.65μg/L (Mevinfos) while sediments ranged from BDL – 3.21µg/kg (Dichlorvos), respectively. Dichlorvos and mevinfos in the water samples exceeded maximum allowable residue limit (0.1μg/L) for individual pesticides in drinking water as stated by European Economic Community. Chi-square at α =0.05 showed there were no significant differences in the levels of identified organophosphorus pesticide residues in sediments and water sample...
