Abstract
This paper determined the strategic sub-areas in the Iranian transmission network first and then conducted a feasibility study for the possible application of new technologies such as HVDC to control and limit short circuit levels. A commonly used method to tolerate the short circuit level is to design the protective capacity of the equipment in such a way that they are capable of withstanding prospective fault currents in the network. Given the high costs and number of equipment in power networks, the necessity to improve the benefit/cost ratio of the network equipment and the possible unavailability of the breaking capacity required at the commercial scale, other methods of short circuit level reduction are required to be studied and applied in power grids. Numerous studies and projects have so far been conducted on the reduction of short circuit level, but the contribution of the present study was to propose a novel practical appro...
