Abstract
The Forest Rights Act, 2006, which entitles communities and safeguards claims over their generational land, has long been a bone of contention. Despite its ambiguities and much opacity, the FRA is a watershed law that warrants tribal land claims and seeks to grant, for the first time, assigning power to tribal communities. Tribal participation has a key role in accomplishing potentials goals of the FRA. Even after the 11 long years of its implementation progress and status is still. In this background a study has been undertaken in Kerala to know the level of awareness among the tribal people about the Forest rights given under FRA, 2006 and the potential factors influencing their awareness level. Study found that the awareness about the act provisions were low especially among the socially and economically backward communities like Paniya and Kattunaickka.
