Abstract
Ginger (Zingiber Officinale Roscoe.) is one of the important cash crops and principal spice of India and abroad. The commonly used manual digging of ginger is time consuming, less efficient and full of drudgery so the mechanization of ginger harvesting is essentially needed. In this study an effort has been made to evaluate the performance of tractor drawn digger for harvesting ginger crop (Mahim-2 variety) in Amdabad village of Bidar district (Karnataka) in black soil. The digger consists of main frame attached with inverted V blade. The digger was operated at a speed of 4.50 km h-1 . The average operational depth of 15.64 cm of the digger was suitable with practically negligible damage to the ginger rhizome. The theoretical field capacity of digger was found to be 0.45 ha h-1 while effective field capacity was 0.32 ha h-1 with the field efficiency of 71.10 per cent. The saving in cost of ginger digging per ha with the use of digger ...
