Abstract
The present study was taken up to assess the effects of potent mutagen Sodium Azide on the two popular rice varieties- CO 51 and BPT 2231. Seeds were treated with eight different concentrations from 1 mM to 8 mM. The LD50 values for CO 51 and BPT 2231 were similar, 2.59 and 2.57 mM concentrations respectively. In both the varieties, root length was observed to be more sensitive to mutagen than shoot length. As expected, the survival of the seedlings in both the varieties declined with the increase in concentrations. Maximum reduction (14.6%) in pollen fertility was recorded in BPT 2231 at the concentration 5 mM and in the case of spikelet fertility, maximum reduction (38.46%) was observed in CO 51 at 5 mM concentration. This study provides the information on the effects of this mutagen and helps in formulation of suitable concentration for designing crop improvement programmes.
