Abstract
Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] is a major staple millet in ensuring food security in the arid regions of the world. It encompasses the potential to produce a higher biomass with better grain quality. Although, its natural habitat pertains drought tolerance, there is a significant reduction in plant stand due to the water stress imposed during the initial growth stage. Hence, this experiment was aimed to screen the inbreds and their crosses for drought tolerance at seedling stages with different level of osmotic stress viz., -3, -5 and -7.5 bar using PEG 6000. The results indicated a significant reduction in germination %, shoot length, root length and seedling vigour index with a concomitant increase in the root/shoot ratio under higher osmotic stress. The inbreds, PT5721, PT6029, PT5748 and ICMB99222 and in hybrids, ICMB99222
