Abstract
Field experiment was conducted to study the impact on sources of biochar on root and rhizosphere activities in cotton. Experiment was conducted with three sources of biochars viz., Maize Biochar (MB), Cotton Biochar (CB) and Prosopis Biochar (PB) at three levels viz. 2.0 t ha-1 (2T), 3.0 t ha-1 (3T) and 4.0 t ha-1 (4T), respectively. For comparison, farm yard manure (FYM) @ 12.5 t ha-1 (12.5T) and control plot (without biochar) was maintained and the recommended doses of fertilizers (RDF) were applied to all the plots irrespective of treatments. The results revealed that application of PB 4T + RDF and CB 4T + RDF significantly influenced root length, root volume and root dry weight, respectively, in cotton. The population of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes was also increased in the biochar applied plots over control. Enhanced activities of dehydrogenase and phosphatase enzymes were directly proportional to the microbial population. ...
