Abstract
A power operated portable cassava sett cutter was developed for the benefit of small farmers to prepare the setts to plant in main field. The physical properties of cassava sett relevant to the design of sett cutter were determined. The average stem length of Mulluvadi and KumKum Rosevarieties were 2100 and 2000 mm, respectively. The average stem diameter (from bottom to apex) of Mulluvadi and KumKum Rose were 20 to 28 mm and 17 to 26 mm, respectively. The average length of setts used for planting is 10 to 150mm and average number of nodes per 150 mm length of the stem is about 8 to 10 for both varieties. The sett cutter was developed with slider crank mechanism. For 17,800 setts to be prepared by manual sett cutter, it takes 15 hours by 3 labourers whereas the developed power operated cassava sett cutter can produce 9600 setts per hour
