Abstract
Senna alata contain a large array of phenolic compounds which make it useful as antifungal and antibacterial. Despite the recent researches, the quantification of the chemical components has not been actually specified. There is a claim by local people that Senna alata can cure fungi and bacteria related diseases. Therefore, there is a need to ascertain this claim by examining the bioactive components that are present in the plant. This research is aimed at determining the chemical components in Senna alata. The Folin-Delis and Folin-Ciocalteu methods were used to quantify the total flavonoids and phenolics. The amounts extracted were from 6.0 to 31.0 mg for Total Phenolic Content per gram of gallic acid and 15.0 to 58.0 mg for Total Flavonoid Content per g of quercetrin equivalent. FT-IR spectrophotometric analysis showed prominent bands of O-H, C=O, C=C, C-H, C-O indicating the presence of flavonol, anthocyanidins, and gallic acid. ...
